ELCA implements secure VPN access for SBB

3 December 2009

The Swiss Railway (SBB) is implementing ELCARD, ELCA’s solution for strong authentication, to provide secure Internet access via the web and a virtual private network (VPN) for their employees and affiliates.

SBB chose ELCARD for its ease of use and deployment combined with highest security aspects. Furthermore, it provides substantial economic advantages compared to the current electronic token based solution, particularly as the SBB is extending access to a larger set of users and offering a wider range of services. Altogether, the target community of users comprises about 9,000 people.

ELCARD was developed by ELCA's security division in order to provide concrete answers to the problems inherent in the implementation, administration and use of a strong authentication solution by a mobile population. Although ELCARD is as secure as any electronic token-based solution, it has lower production costs, is simpler to use and implement, eliminates the need for installation on the client terminal and complies with environmental standards. All these advantages set ELCA apart from the competition.
