SBB – Strategic Partnership

1 December 2009

The Swiss Federal Railways (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, SBB) are a long-term ELCA client, and we worked on various projects for them in 2009.

ELCA engineers continue to work closely with SBB’s marketing and distribution department on the further development of sales channels for ticketing (e.g. web shop, iPhone, ticket vending machines) that use modern technologies and are suited to the wide variety of products offered by public transport. The technological competencies that we provide include Java development, web solutions and systems architecture.

In the area of ticketing, SBB adopted ELCA’s SecuTix secure ticketing solution in 2009, for tickets sold as print@home tickets or on mobile phone screens. Tickets can be verified visually, without the need for an electronic control device.

Due to increasing market complexity, SBB’s rail freight services division has overhauled its data warehousing. In the context of this development, several extract, transform and load (ETL) processes have been implemented using PowerCenter by Informatica. Data are stored in an Oracle database and the reporting is done using SAP Business Objects.

SBB’s IT department needed a new solution to provide secure remote access for 9,000 employees and affiliates. ELCA replaced an old system involving physical tokens with ELCARD, which provides a simple, reliable solution with lower operating and distribution costs.

Based on these services, ELCA was named 2009 “best supplier in the IT project business” by SBB’s corporate management.
