Case Management Modelling (Internship / Master Thesis)

Many power users today work on case management systems:  the system partially constrains what they can do, but the users themselves guide what needs to be done. E.g. a health professional that treats a medical dossier needs to consult many sources of information and documents and contact many other parties about it. There are also waiting times and deadlines build into the process. In addition, the law enforces certain steps and traceability of what has been done.

A rather new notation called Case Management Modelling Notation (CMMN) allows to express such constraints about how to work on such cases. In contrast to other more established notation (such as BPMN or UML) it is more appropriate for more flexibility of the interactions.

We would like to evaluate whether modelling in CMMN could improve custom-built case management systems. Is the notation appropriate in practice? Could it make such systems easier to implement and more flexible when requirements change? Are the notation and underlying tools expressive enough?

In this role

We propose to evaluate the question in the context of a real application. Proposed steps are:

  • Setup a small case prototype with Flowable to get to know the tool and extend it to understand how it works
  • Interview business analysts and user experience experts from our product team to understand what slice would be useful to evaluate the approach on. Ensure that the chosen slice is representative and gets a lot of evaluation benefits for the effort spent
  • Implement the slice and compare it to the existing variant in terms of flexibility, robustness, ease of implementation and configuration

Depending on findings, propose an evolution of the case management notation to match our needs
