Decentralized ID - Infrastructure (Internship)

Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) are a new concept for verifiable, "self-sovereign" digital identity. DIDs are fully under the control of the holder, independent from any centralized authority. Thus, they could be the solution for populations which identity is hard to verify and essential to protect: “… in many developing countries they can be the difference between life and death. … . Refugee systems around the world require identity solutions that must work in the harshest conditions—and of course they must work beyond the boundaries of a single nation.” [2]

Another use case for DID is the electronic patient record.

At a high-level glance, DID initiatives rely on the one hand, on a blockchain to provide trust to third parties involved in some interaction with the holder, and on the other hand, the wallet allows the latter to control use of his/her identity. The DID concept is however still very young with no clear emerging standard nor solution for the implementation. The aim of the proposed internships is thus to better understand the exiting state-of-the-art and test the most promising approaches in a proof of concept for the refugees’ case. The work is for two applicants, one on the blockchain, and the other one on the wallet.

In this role

  • Review and evaluate the existing propositions/standards, as well as open source initiatives, for the implementation of a DID infrastructure based on the blockchain technology.
  • Analyze the requirements and draw the use cases to provide the refugees with a DID system able to answer their need for mobility and privacy.
  • Select the technologies and development frameworks the most suitable to implement the DID system for refugees.
  • Draw the architecture and design of the refugees’ DID system based on the selected technologies, including practical solutions for backup, privacy, recovery, selective disclosure, …
