Improve data protection and privacy with service meshes (Master Thesis / Internship)


Service meshes are getting more and more traction and we start seeing hybrid service mesh topologies where VMs and containers environments are wired together over on-premises, private and public cloud integrations. At the same time, we have never been so sensible to data protection and privacy preserving concerns.

Service meshes offer interesting capabilities in terms of security policy modeling, management and enforcement but are generally restricted to simple rules such as service to service call authorizations. The goal of the internship is to assess and experiment how service meshes can be leveraged to support more complex data protection and privacy preserving rules allowing, for instance, to hide real user identities when crossing some boundaries of the mesh or to ensure that no sensitive information are able to reach some areas of the mesh.

In this role

The objectives of this internship include:

  • Explore what are the out of the box capabilities of services meshes such as AWS App mesh, Consul connect or Kuma in terms of security policy extensibility
  • Evaluate how dataprivacy and protection rules could be implemented in the evaluated products
  • Implement proof of concept
  • (time allowing) Explore if the studied service mesh approach could be transposed to support data protection in data mesh implementation

  • Experience with Public cloud (e.g. AWS)
  • Experience in backend development (Python, Go, Java)
