(Internship/Master Thesis) Digital Twin Security Framework for Smart cities

This internship is part of the 4-year-long Blue City project from Innosuisse.

The Blue City Project is a transdisciplinary consortium aiming to map a city’s multi-layered, interconnected network of flows (traffic, waste, energy, …) and create a responsive Urban Digital Twin for the digitally transformed, post-pandemic world.

A Digital Twin (DT) is a digital representation of a real-world entity or system. It reflects a single physical object, process, organisation, person, or other abstraction. DT enables true two-way communication between the physical and the digital world. Combined with Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning technology, a Digital twin platform will assist evidence-based, collective decisions to improve urban well-being, sustainability, resilience, and maximize ecological value.

DT are not always designed with robust cybersecurity in mind and thus represents a potential huge area of security vulnerability. Therefore, we drafted a framework to secure the DT and its interactions with the physical world.

In this role

In the context of this internship, we aim at assessing this security framework and evaluate it on use cases from partners. It implies the following activities:

  • Acquire know-how on existing standards and meta-models (e.g., NGSI-LD, Azure Digital Twin Definition Language)
  • Take over the security framework
  • Identify cross-organization use cases with our partner ecosystem
  • Implement the selected use cases
  • Extend and adapt the security framework based on assessment and use cases.

  • Software development: Python
  • Interest for semantic interoperability and data models
  • Interest for security: Zero-Trust, service mesh security (istio, kuma, …)
  • Interest for distributed systems, cloud (Azure, AWS) and devops technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, K3s)
