IoT Platform for Smart City (Master Thesis / Internship)


The energy transition rises the need for large smart city initiatives where many different actors need to collaborate, and systems to interoperate.

One of the biggest technical challenges is the need for a common model and open standards for interoperability to ensure that organizations can communicate using available smart systems that understand each other.

In this context, ELCA has worked on an IoT platform to acquire, store and visualize data from multiple types of sensors.  We now want to address the interoperability challenge and evaluate existing frameworks and standards.

In this role

The objectives of this internship include:

  • Acquire know-how on existing standards and models (e.g., NGSI-LD)
  • Define evaluation criteria and select such a standard
  • Identify cross-organization use cases to implement
  • Extend our existing IoT platform to support this standard
  • Implement the selected use cases in the extended platform

  • Software development: Python
  • Interest for semantic interoperability and data models
  • Interest for distributed systems, cloud (Azure, AWS) and devops technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, K3s)
