Multi-factor authentication: The way forward (Internship)

TrustID is a full stack, multi-factor authentication (MFA) solution and Identity Provider developed by ELCA. As an authentication solution used by several Swiss clients, TrustID attaches great importance to its high level of security and its agile development model. To keep improving its security, the team is committed to use new technologies that drive the industry every day.

MFA is a standard in the industry to protect sensitive resources and is often even mandatory to access them. It’s an ever-evolving field, and new types of factors regularly emerge. The balance between security and user experience is key and should be taken into account in the decision of what factors to offer to the users.

Additionally, password-less authentication is becoming increasingly popular. It completely “drops” the password to improve the user experience but at what cost?

In this role

  1. Study & evaluate the currently existing MFA factors. Don’t forget to take usability / user experience into account.
  2. Look into the current researches in MFA field and sum up the state of the research.
  3. Password-less authentication: Investigate the pros and the cons.
  4. Understand the TrustID architecture and how our custom authenticators are implemented.
  5. Implement or integrate one or two proof of concepts of new authenticators in TrustID.
