In a context of digital transformation where enterprises must provide services online and quickly adapt to business changes, new architecture patterns emerge, i.e. API and microservices architecture.

API are façades on top of downstream services implementing business functions, e.g. order management. Their exposition to consumers is well managed and secured through API management solutions. We call it north/south traffic management.

Downstream services can be organized as a set of microservices interacting with each other in order to implement business functions. The management of these interactions, known as East/West traffic, is quite complex and requires specific architecture patterns and tools. This is where the concepts of service mesh comes into play. These technologies are quite mature but still new, and the market is moving fast.

In this context, ELCA aims at providing an evaluation of the mesh implementations.

In this role

The objectives of this internship include:

  • Explore the possible integration patterns including asynchronous east/west integration, suitability in hybrid cloud topologies and compatibility with Serverless technologies
  • Build an evaluation framework for mesh implementation
    • Describe the challenges of microservices and service mesh
    • Define a set of evaluation criteria (performance, monitoring, security, …)
    • Define an assessment guide allowing to help in deciding if a service mesh provides benefits in a particular context
  • List the main vendors
    • Evaluate and select 3 vendors based on the criteria defined in the framework
  • Define and setup a PoC environment
    • Evaluate the 3 selected vendors with the PoC
