Towards a Self-Sovereign Identity (Internship/Master Thesis)

Apply

Nowadays identity is becoming digital. We are no longer in control of all the data of our identity (who we are, our governmental documents, our medical data, our reputation and online behavior , etc.)

The current draft of the Federal Act on Electronic Identity is based on the principles of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). With the prospect of having an SSI swiss digital identity, there is even more potential in SSI and questions arise on how the transition to this paradigm will be done.

While the identity management is currently done in a centralized manner, we will need to change to a decentralized architecture, where the user is in the control of his identity.

New standards appear in order to move towards a decentralized architecture. For an SSI swiss identity to be accepted, we need to prepare a smooth transition and we need to validate the new concepts.

The aim of the proposed internship is to study SSI and setup a Proof of Concept (PoC) that can help the existing actors involved in identity management transition towards SSI.

In this role

  1. Understand the concept and the architecture of SSI
  2. Study the emerging standards of authentication protocols (e.g. Self-Issued OpenID Provider v2) and how existing established authentication standard (SAML and OIDC) are compatible with SSI
  3. Study how traditional Identity Providers (IdPs) can make the transition towards SSI
  4. Implement a PoC on IdP that can validate an SSI identity
