Vaudoise Assurances is one of Switzerland’s leading insurance providers, serving more than 400,000 customers and managing millions of policies, claims, and invoices. Its enterprise data platform supports numerous mission-critical applications where availability, reliability, and performance are essential.
As the company continued to expand its digital services, ensuring that its data infrastructure could scale efficiently while maintaining high service levels became a strategic priority.
The challenge: limitations in the existing platform
The data platform was originally built on Azure Cosmos DB using the MongoDB API, leveraging integration with the company’s Azure environment.
However, as workloads and data volumes grew, several limitations began to affect performance and operational efficiency:
- Use of an outdated MongoDB API version (4.2), limiting access to newer capabilities
- Slower execution of complex queries despite extensive optimization
- Limited support for advanced search features such as full-text and wildcard queries
- A restrictive 2 MB document size limit
- Backup and restore mechanisms not fully aligned with business recovery needs
- Limited transparency into resource usage due to the Request Unit pricing model
- Increasing infrastructure costs as the platform scaled
To address these issues, Vaudoise evaluated whether a native MongoDB platform could deliver improved performance, functionality, and cost efficiency.
The solution: migrating to MongoDB Atlas
Working with ELCA, Vaudoise conducted a comprehensive proof of concept to evaluate MongoDB Atlas, the fully managed cloud platform for MongoDB.
The evaluation confirmed clear advantages:
- Faster query execution and improved system responsiveness
- Advanced search capabilities through Atlas Search
- More robust backup and recovery mechanisms
- Greater operational visibility through detailed monitoring metrics
Because the existing environment already relied on the MongoDB API, the migration required minimal changes to application code. The primary technical adaptation involved redesigning change stream components to account for platform differences. The migration was carefully executed with extensive testing and close collaboration with the MongoDB support team. Deployment was rolled out progressively across environments, ensuring a controlled transition with minimal disruption.
Today, the platform has been running successfully in production for over a year.
Measurable business impact
After one year of production usage, the new platform has delivered clear benefits.
Performance
- Up to 20% faster performance for medium and complex queries
- Improved reliability for long-running data processes
Cost optimization
- Approximately 40% reduction in infrastructure costs compared to equivalent workloads on the previous platform
New capabilities
- Advanced text search using Atlas Search
- Access to native MongoDB features unavailable in the previous environment
- A modern, continuously evolving management interface
Operational excellence
- Detailed monitoring dashboards and performance metrics
- Simplified backup and restore processes
- Built-in auditing functionality for governance and compliance
“Migrating to MongoDB Atlas has significantly improved the performance, transparency, and efficiency of our data platform. It provides a scalable and reliable foundation that supports our long-term digital strategy.”
