Smart City Guide App (Master Thesis/ Internhips)


Imagine you’re walking around a city and see a storefront or a restaurant that peaks your interest, wouldn’t it be great to have an app that enables you to simply point your camera at the store or restaurant front and get all kinds of relevant information, such as current sales, reviews, menu, etc.? This is what this project is about. For practical reasons (data availability and access), we will focus this work on the restaurants of Lausanne.

In this role

Challenges: In this project, there are a few processes that should work sequentially and in parallel. A well-defined system’s architecture will be crucial. Correctly identifying the restaurant is the first critical step towards this search (using deep learning + localization). From there, different queries to different -web- sources of information need to be launched to extract relevant information (text search) which not always indicated how and where expected. Finally, rendering the correct information in a timely manner is key.

What you will learn: You will be a junior data scientist, developing your skills in machine learning (deep learning, object detection and recognition), in visual search architectures and in mobile app development.

Possible extensions (depends on advancement of the aforementioned work): Build an augmented map of a neighborhood / Other cities / Other service sectors / Add preferred information providers (Tripadvisor, Fourchette verte, …) / ChatBot / “Take me to the best restaurant in a x km radius” / Information summarization.
